The Portes du Soleil is a haven for two-wheel enthusiasts; be it a family ride, cross country mountain biking, fast and furious downhill, or mountain climbs on a road bike you will find it here.

Châtel is perfectly placed in the extensive Portes du Soleil, the bigest bike park in Europe with 600km of mountain biking trails across 12 villages accessible with just one lift pass.

Châtel itself has 90km of trails with the network of lifts enabling riders to cross to surrounding mountain villages such as Les Gets, Morzine & Avoriaz in France and Morgins & Champery in Switzerland.

E-BIKES AND TRAIL CYCLING

If you like being on two wheels there is nothing better than trails surrounded by mountains. As well as the tracks in the hills, the river trail runs 300m from the chalet and you can cycle alongside the River Dranse to Abondance, perhaps for lunch or to visit the market.

Mountain E-Bikes have dramatically changed the biking options in the mountains – let’s face it, cycling in the mountains can be challenging. E-bikes allow recreational cyclists to get up on the lofty trails for a fabulous cycling experience.

Ebikes are available to rent locally & the Portes du Soleil have published a e-bike trail map with great bike routes.

FOLLOW IN THE TRACKS OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE

ROAD CYCLING

It doesn’t get much better than road biking in the beautiful scenery of the Abondance valley and if you are looking for some challenging mountain roads, you will find them here. The local climbs are the Col de Bassachaux, Col de Corbier and the Pas de Morgins.

Châtel often makes an appearance in the Critérium du Dauphiné, an 8 day road race through the Rhône-Alpes and a preliminary race to the Tour de France, as well as other races in the pro-bike circuit.

BIKE PARKS AND ALPINE TRAILS

DOWNHILL BIKING

The Châtel bike park is one of the most exciting bike parks in Europe, with 18 downhill tracks for beginners through to advanced. The bike park is also the host to some great bike events through the summer.

The park is located at Pré la Joux, 8km from Chalet Cannelle. If you prefer to conserve your energy for the bike park, the village shuttle bus has racks for bikes or there is plenty of parking at Pré la Joux.

PASS’PORTES DU SOLEIL

Make a trip to the Portes du Soleil an annual event for the Pass’portes du Soleil – an awesome circuit through the villages crossing France & Switzerland. This well organised event has everything covered with refreshment stops, entertainment and route for e-bikes and kids too.
